At the Cross with Mary: A Mother’s Love That Lets Go
Summary from Fr. Matthew Brown Homily – September 14, 2025 St. Mary Magdalen Orthodox Church (OCA)
A Mother’s Costly Love
It is almost impossible to imagine what it was like for the Mother of God to stand at the foot of the Cross. She who once heard her Son’s first cry at birth now stood to hear His final breath. For any parent, to lose a child is profoundly unnatural, and yet this was the sacrifice set before her. She was asked to release the one most precious to her, to let go of her only Son for the sake of the world.
The Nature of Real Love
This moment reveals the true nature of love. Real love does not cling or try to control. A love that holds too tightly ends up destroying the very one it seeks to protect. True love is always open, always willing to give itself away.
The Cross shows us this pattern. Christ’s arms stretched wide are not closed in possession but open in embrace, gathering the whole world into His life. Mary models this same love. She accepted the deepest sacrifice a mother could endure, not because it was easy, but because love required it. By letting go, she teaches us that love is not ownership but surrender. Families, marriages, and friendships all find their true purpose when they are not turned inward but outward—when they become blessings for others rather than possessions for ourselves.
Trials as the Path to Growth
God also allows us to walk this path. He does not shield us from every hardship or trial. Instead, He lets us grow through them. Without struggles, we would remain spiritually infantile, never developing the strength of virtue or the character that comes from endurance.
Just as Mary grew through her sacrifice, we are invited into a love that is willing to suffer for the sake of others. Hardship, when accepted with faith, becomes the soil in which true love and maturity take root.
The Measure of Love
The Cross teaches us that what we cling to too tightly eventually turns to ash. But what we surrender to God, what we give away in love, becomes eternal. The measure of our love is revealed in the measure of our sacrifice.
The Mother of God was crucified with her Son through her suffering and self-giving. And because she gave Him up, the whole world received life. This is the call set before each of us: to love with open hands, to release control, and to give ourselves away.
At the Cross, we learn the depth of love and discover life that cannot die.
